Target 10: Suffixes – the ‘y’ to ‘i’ rule

Rule: If the word ends in a consonant followed by ‘y’, change the y to ‘i’.

happy + ness = happiness

consonant + y ‘y’ changes to ‘i’

Rule: if the word ends in vowel followed by ‘y’, keep the ‘y’.
e.g. enjoy+able = enjoyable stay+ed = stayed

Exception: When you add ‘ing’ you keep the ‘y’ otherwise you would have

two ’i’s together!
e.g. cry + ing = crying
