Target 7: Suffixes - The disappearing ‘e’ rule

for words ending in a magic ’e’


Rule for suffixes beginning with a VOWEL or ‘Y’:-

When a word ends in a magic ‘e’ (if you need to revise this - see Target
12 in Part Two!), drop the ‘e’ before you add the suffix.


hate + ing hat ing hating


e

rose + y = rosy love + able = lovable safe + est = safest



Rule for suffixes beginning with a CONSONANT – just add the suffix!


hate + ful = hateful safe + ly = safely shape + less = shapeless
