Target 10: Adding Detail to Sentences/ Complex Sentences

Here are some more examples of complex
sentences. Remember that, unlike compound
sentences, we are adding information that
does not make sense on its own.

Sentence: The gardener bought a new lawnmower.

Extra information: since his old one had broken

Adding the information at the beginning of the sentence: ONE COMMA

Since his old one had broken, the gardener bought a new lawnmower.

Adding the information at the end of the sentence: ONE COMMA

The gardener bought a new lawnmower, since his old one had broken.

Adding the information in the middle of the sentence:

The gardener, since his old one had broken, bought a new lawnmower.

Great! Now I can write both compound and complex
sentences.
I also learned in Target 8 how to add detail by using
‘describing words’ such as adjectives and adverbs.

Yes, so now you can make your writing

lively, colourful and more interesting for
the reader!
