Target 7: Joining Sentences with Conjunctions
Task 1 (1 Point)
A. Conjunctions are underlined below:
Amir was worried because he was going on holiday to Spain but he could not find
his passport. He looked in his desk since he usually kept it there then he
searched his bedroom. He looked in every cupboard and he was checking in his
suitcase when his father arrived. His father checked the desk again although
Amir had already looked there. Amir’s father smiled and he held up the
passport. The passport had fallen behind a drawer but he had spotted it! Amir
was very relieved as he would not have been able to fly to Spain without it.

B. Suitable conjunctions:
1. We can go walking if it does not rain.
2. The race will start when the whistle blows.
3. Anya joined the gym because she likes to exercise.
4. I visited the street where I used to live.
5. You chop the onions while I peel the potatoes.
Task 2 (2 Points) Bonus!
Up to two points can be awarded for this task. To achieve two points, at least
three different conjunctions should be used and the sentences should make
good sense.
Task 3: Find your own evidence (2 points in total)
1. Award one point for finding three compound sentences and underlining their
conjunctions in the chosen piece of writing.
2. Award one point if, for each of the three sentences, an alternative
conjunction has been suggested.
