Target 8: Describing Words (Adjectives and Adverbs)
So, adverbs and adjectives make
your writing more interesting?
Yes, they make your writing more colourful
– they give detail, add atmosphere, build up
tension and excitement and allow the
reader to ‘picture’ your story.
Summary: Adjectives and Adverbs
Adjectives
Adjectives are describing words that are used
to add information to nouns.
They tell us things like size, shape, colour, age
and texture.
Adjectives usually come before the noun but we
can also put them after the noun by adding the
verb ’to be’.
Examples: the tall tree the tree is tall
Adverbs
Adverbs are also describing words. They are
mainly used to add information to verbs - they
give us more detail about what is happening in
the sentence.
They can be in lots of places in a sentence:
Slowly, the snake slithered away.
The snake slowly slithered away.
The snake slithered slowly away.
The snake slithered away slowly.
Adverbs can also be used with adjectives to
make them more ‘powerful’.
Example: extremely hot porridge
