Target 3: Finding the Verb
The next sentence building brick we will look at is the verb.
What are verbs?
Most verbs are ‘action’ words. They tell us what is happening (the action)
in a sentence. Here are some examples:-
barked walk talked jump
The dog barked at the cat. I walk to school.
‘ACTION’ VERB ‘ACTION’ VERB
However, some verbs are not actually ‘action’ words but are ‘being’ words
- they tell us what is, was or will be in the sentence. Look at these
examples:
were is are has been
They were happy. Susan is a taxi driver.
‘BEING’
VERB
They will be happy. Susan has been a taxi driver.
So, verbs are ‘action’ and ‘being’ words. And did
you know that all complete sentences contain a
verb?
We will look at complete sentences in Target 6.
