Target 6: Sentences – General Rules

2 points

Task 3 Find your own evidence

Find in your written work, from any subject, a piece of writing that shows you
have written in complete sentences. Show that:

 you have begun each sentence with a capital letter

 you have ended each sentence with a full stop, a question mark or an
exclamation mark
 your sentences contain a verb

 your sentences make sense
 your sentences are of a sensible length and they do not confuse the reader
with too much information.

Summary: Sentences – General Rules

Complete sentences must:

 begin with a capital letter
 end with a full stop, exclamation mark or question
mark

 contain a verb (a ‘doing’ or ‘being’ word)
 make sense (contain enough information for the
reader to understand what is being said).

Remember:
 Do not make your sentences so long that you confuse the reader.
 Try to vary the length of your sentences to add interest to your writing.
See the example below:

The jockey could feel his horse growing more and more tired as he
sped out ahead of the others and sprinted towards the finishing line.

Then he smiled. He had won the race. He listened to the crowd
cheering and felt very proud.
